Film photography & Video editing

Hi, I’m Ustin Kompaniets, and film photography is at the heart of everything I do.

For the past 20 years, I’ve worked in video production — editing, color grading and doing some cinematography. But film photography grounds me: it’s how I slow down, stay present, and reconnect with the art of making images.

I shoot with the Pentax K2, and Rolleiflex, both 35mm and medium format. Whether I’m photographing in the streets of Tokyo or the quiet hills of Northern & Southern Thailand, I look for moments that feel timeless.

My main interest is portrait photography and people.

Alongside photography, I’ve worked on music videos, documentaries, and high-end commercials. I use tools like DaVinci Resolve, After Effects, Lightroom and Photoshop daily.

Filmmaking & Education

I’ve created over 30 courses on filmmaking, color grading, and photography, helping others master the craft. If you’re interested in improving your visuals, check out my free resources or video editing course to get started.

Systems Thinking Changed My Life

If there’s one concept that’s transformed how I see the world, it’s Systems Thinking. For anyone serious about clarity, creativity, or leadership, I highly recommend “Systems Thinking – And Other Dangerous Habits” by H. William Dettmer.

Travel, Film Photography & Life in Thailand

When I’m not editing or filming, you’ll find me out in the world—with a film camera in hand or a backpack strapped on. I’ve traveled to over 30 countries, including a long motorcycle trip across Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and India.

Today, I live in Thailand—surrounded by jungle, ocean, and endless inspiration.

I have a deep love for film photography. Shooting 35mm and medium format helps me slow down, stay present, and reconnect with the roots of visual storytelling.

A Love for Cinema

I’m also a lifelong student of cinema. I keep a detailed list of every movie I watch—complete with personal ratings, notes on directors, and little markers like “5++++” or “waste of time.”

My dream? To direct at least three iconic films that leave a lasting impact.

Until then, I’m doing the work—telling stories, helping others master their craft, and chasing that next great adventure.

Why I Love Film Photography

Film slows you down. It forces you to compose. To think. To feel. Unlike digital, you can’t just spray and pray. You only have 36 frames—and that makes each one count.
Whether you’re a beginner or experienced shooter, I believe everyone can benefit from shooting film. Learn more in my post on Why Film Photography Still Matters.
